Interlude: The Shuttle

Shuttle Presumed Stolen?!
by James Hopschotch.

The Watch in Capes has announced in a conference that the Shuttle, already missing for several days, is presumed to be stolen. The Watch is doing ongoing investigations, but so far the evidence that they have gathered points to none other than Norbert Giles, the former mayor of Räan. Mr Giles was removed from his function due to a large scandal a few weeks ago, and was missing ever since.

Last night the Watch in Capes gave a large conference, to give the newspapers a chance to ask questions about the recent disappearance of the Shuttle. The Shuttle is the only link between Kataria and the colony Apaga, which made the case of its disappearance so pressing and warranted the creation of this conference. The Shuttle disappeared last Wednesday from the harbour in Capes, without attracting any notice. It is normal that the Shuttle always goes for a small trip just before the monthly trek to Apaga, to check the sails and rigging. So when the Shuttle sailed out from the harbour people did not think about it. It was only two days later that people began to worry and the Watch was called in.

The Watch has been investigating ever since, and they have come to some disturbing conclusions. It seems that recently several crew members of the Shuttle have disappeared, under who the captain, Rob Fawnbeard. They all disappeared in the night, in some instances with some disturbances, causing neighbours to alarm the Watch. Also there have been a series of thefts all over Kataria of dried food, sails, wood and other items that might be linked to the Shuttle. These facts point to the possibility that someone stole the Shuttle with a specific reason.

On the evening that the Shuttle sailed from the harbour a lead arrives at the Watch headquarters that Norbert Giles was seen at a farm just outside Capes. Several Watch officers made their way to the farm, but

could find no trace of him or the occupants of the farm. Later the farmer and his wife were found killed, their bodies dumped in the Wet district in Capes. At the harbour the Watch made several arrests, which included the harbour master and some of his workers. Most of these people are still being interrogated, though the harbour master has been released yesterday. Several miles outside the city the Watch also found the remains of a large camp, with tracks leading to a natural harbour. There remainders of a makeshift docks and bit of wood and sail were found, which might indicate that the Shuttle was converted in some way.

Aside from the mention of Norbert Giles to lure the Watch away from Capes, there have been other clues to make the Watch suspect his involvement. For one his name was connected with the starnge behaviour of criminals all over Kataria for some time. It is thought that the thefts of sails and wood were his doing, confirmed by some of the statements of his competitors. Also one of the crewmembers managed to escape, and he named the head of the group to be called Norbert, before collapsing. He is now being treated in the Jasmine hospital and is under heavy guard by the Watch.

The Apaga Terminal, the agency responsible for keeping contact with the colony, commented that they are unsure how to continue.
"Without a ship there is not much we can do, and the question now is, will the Shuttle be returned or not", Richard Keese responded, spokesman for the Apaga Terminal. He went on saying that if the Shuttle was to be replaced, it was worth looking at a steam-powered ship, from the University. "Like the one that was sent out recently, with that Luckett fellow." Nillian Luckett left several weeks ago, in the Dr. Biene's Request. It was rumoured that he was travelling after the real Dr. Biene, a legendary steam-power engineer and one of the founders of the University.
